How To Makeover A Nursery With Paint

Whether you’re preparing for baby number 1 or looking to refresh your nursery for your next bundle of joy, never underestimate the power of paint. We transformed this nursery from a neutral room into a colourful and joyous space that will grow with the baby, saving us time, effort and money in the years to come. Here’s how we did it:

Step 1:

We began by washing the walls with Selleys Sugar Soap before sanding with 120 grit sandpaper. Next, we wiped away any sanding dust with a microfibre cloth.

Step 2:

With Selleys Spakfilla, we then filled any small holes in the walls and caulked any gaps with Maverick Gap Filler. Once dry, we sanded down these surfaces until they were even.

Step 3:

We then spot primed the filled areas with 1x coat of Dulux 1Step Prep and allowed it to dry.

Step 4:

Unfortunately, the door and trims in this room had previously been painted with water-based paint over oil-based paint. This is your reminder to never skip the Metho Test.

This meant the paint was peeling from these surfaces. Therefore, we next had to scrape away the flaking paint from the door and trim and sand until these surfaces were even.

Step 5:

Next, we applied 1x coat of Zinsser Extreme Adhesion Primer to the door and trim, allowing a minimum of 3 hours drying time. We recommend 24 hours cure time for this step though.

Step 6:

Once cured, we then began priming our walls. We applied 1x coat of Dulux 1Step Prep and allowed it to dry.

Step 7:

Next, we started on the half wall. We first applied 2x coats of Dulux Wash & Wear in Whisper White to the top half of the walls. We made sure to allow the first coat to dry before applying the second.

Step 8:

Once both coats were dry, we then measured and taped halfway up the wall for our half wall design. Then, we bleed sealed the tape by rolling the Whisper White topcoat along the bottom edge of the tape. This is the secret to clean lines every time.

Step 9:

Once dry, we applied 2x coats of Dulux Wash & Wear in Dulux Equanimity to the bottom half of the wall, allowing the first coat to dry before applying the second.

Step 10:

Finally, we applied 2x coats of Dulux Aquanamel in Dulux Vivid White to the door and trims, allowing to dry between each coat. Once dry, we removed the masking tape to reveal our painting makeover.

Once we added in our beautifully painted yellow tallboy, hung our painted Kmart frames and placed our op shop frame upcycles around the room, the space looked brand new.
