Why choose concrete sealer?
Protection: With a good sealer your floor will last much longer, simple as that. That’s because it protects your surfaces against scuffs and stains as well as water absorption by forming an impregnable protective layer. Oil stains, yellowing or fading, mud, dirt and mould are not going to be a problem. Your floor will look brand new for years to come.
Cost-effective solution: All those benefits for a very affordable price – much cheaper than replacing or repairing the whole thing. You can focus on choosing the best-looking colour option and the sealer will take care of the rest.
Versatility: With such a wide range of different applications, sealers are easily one of the most useful and versatile products out there. They can be used with plain concrete, exposed aggregate, stamped concrete, coloured concrete and many more.
FAQs
What do I need for my indoor project?
For indoor flooring, we typically use the so-called film-forming sealers – either acrylic or epoxy. The latter are much more durable, which is why they’re often used in garages and high-traffic environments. Acrylic sealers are more affordable and are the go-to choices for residential concrete floors, like basements. When it comes to any indoor concrete surface, water-based sealers are the safest bet because they are free from harmful VOC fumes.
What happens if I don’t seal my surfaces?
Then you’re running a high risk of damaging your concrete surfaces. It’s a very porous material, prone to absorbing liquids. Chemicals, water, dirt, mud, mould, different particles, cracking and discolouration - it’ll be much more susceptible to all of them.
How do I apply the sealer? Can I do it myself?
That depends on the type of the sealer. Generally speaking, for most of the domestic applications you can go ahead and give it a go on your own – it’s fairly straightforward. All you need is a paint roller and a pump-up sprayer. Things are a little different when you’re dealing with high-performance sealers as they typically require professional installation and specialised tools.
How long does the concrete sealer last?
That depends on the type of sealer you’re using, among other things. Most common acrylic sealers can last anywhere between 1 to 3 years, while the more durable epoxy ones – up to 10 years. There are other factors that can have a big impact on the general condition of your concrete surface, like the amount of traffic, the general environment and even the type of substrate.
If I use it, will the surface get slippery?
Depends on the sealer - penetrating ones tend to have little to no impact on the surface in terms of traction. Top coatings, on the other hand, can have that effect, so it’s best to use anti-skid additives as well for safety.
