How To Paint Wooden Furniture
Painting wooden furniture might be controversial, but it’s one of the best ways to refresh a space and give your furniture a new lease on life. This tallboy was in desperate need of an upgrade and when it came time to add some colour to a nursery, this tallboy was destined for something great.
Here’s how we transformed this wooden tallboy with paint:
Step 1:
We first had to remove the handles from the tallboy and put them aside. This meant taking out all the drawers and getting them ready to sand. Then, we sanded down the tallboy and the drawers using an orbital sander with 120 grit sandpaper to dull the finish. Once done, we removed all the dust with a microfibre cloth.
Step 2:
Next up we applied 1 coat of Porter’s Paints Prepare & Prime. We began by cutting in with a brush around the edges and grooves of the tallboy before using a mini roller to cover the rest of the tallboy’s surface. We allowed the primer to dry for 2 hours.
Step 3:
Now it was time to paint. Our nursery project involved a bold and bright colour palette and as such, we were painting this tallboy in Porter’s Paints Tumeric. We applied 3 coats of Porter’s Paint Aquasatin to the tallboy. As with the primer, we first cut in with a brush before rolling with a mini roller. We allowed 2 hours drying time between each coat.
Step 4:
The old metal handles of the tallboy did not fit the aesthetic of the refreshed nursery. Therefore, we chose to use some new wooden handles. We used Zinsser’s Bulls Eye 1 2 3 Primer spray to prime the handles, allowing them to dry fully.
Step 5:
Finally, we applied 3 coats of our Porter’s Paints Tumeric to the handles, allowing them to dry between coats. Once our 3rd coat was dry, we attached the handles and placed the drawers back into the tallboy.
