Kmart Shelf Painting Hack

Don’t settle for standard shelving. With just a little bit of paint, you can transform even the most basic shelves into standout pieces of home décor that perfectly fit your aesthetic. With only 3 steps, this Kmart hack is ideal for beginner DIYers, seasoned pros or anyone looking for a quick and easy DIY win.

Here's what you need:

• Kmart laminate shelves
• Sample pot (in your chosen colour)
• Dulux Precision Maximum Strength Adhesion Primer
• Sandpaper (120 grit)
• Brushes
• Microfibre cloth

Here's how you do it:

Step 1: Sand

Start by sanding down your shelves with 120 grit sandpaper to dull the smooth finish of the laminate surface. This is essential to ensure the primer and paint stick to the surface. Next, wipe away any dust from the shelves with a microfibre cloth.

Step 2: Prime

Apply 1x coat of Dulux Precision Maximum Strength Adhesion Primer to the shelves with a brush and allow to dry completely. We recommend this primer for tough-to-paint surfaces such as laminate. This will give your topcoat the best surface to stick to, meaning a long-lasting finish for your shelves.

Step 3: Paint

Finally, apply 2x coats of your chosen sample pot colour to the shelves with a brush. We are using Dulux Symphony Red for our shelves. Allow your first coat to dry fully before moving on to the second.
