How To Remove Tannin From New Timber

Fresh timber is fullof potential. Whether it’s a new deck, a repaired fence or a DIY garden bed you’ve poured your heart and soul into, there’s plenty of reasons to get excited about a new timber project. However, the last thing your outdoor space needs is timber leaching and tannin bleeding from the new timber ruining the look of your timber and staining your outdoor surfaces.

Removing tannin from your new timber is an essential step in any timber project. This can occur naturally in 6-8 weeks. Thankfully, with Intergrain UltraPrep Tannin & Oil Remover, you won’t have to wait more than 15 minutes.

Here’s how to quickly and easily remove tannin from your fresh timber.

Step 1:

Remove surface dirt by sweeping or washing down with water.

Step 2:

Wet the timber surface to be cleaned with water.

Step 3:

Shake the Intergrain UltraPrep Tannin & Oil Remover well before applying undiluted to the timber. Use a stiff bristled brush to scrub the timber. Avoid spot cleaning to prevent a patchy finish.

Expert Tip - For best results UltraPrep Tannin & Oil Remover should be applied to cool surfaces, out of direct sunlight, to avoid the cleaner drying on the timber.

Step 4:

Leave the Tannin & Oil Remover on for 10-15 minutes, ensuring timber stays damp throughout this period. If necessary, apply more Tannin & Oil Remover to keep timber damp.

Step 5:

Scrub the timber vigorously with a stiff bristled broom.

Step 6:

Rinse off the Tannin & Oil Remover thoroughly. We recommend using a high-pressure cleaner. If unavailable, use a garden hose on maximum pressure.

Step 7:

Follow by cleaning the timber with Intergrain UltraPrep Timber Cleaner. Allow to fully dry before applying your timber oil or stain.
