How To Repaint A Fireplace

How do you transform your outdated fireplace into a stunning feature of your home? Paint it! And with the beautiful Porter’s Paints Aqua Satin range, adding elegance and sophistication to your home has never been easier. Follow along as we pull a dated metal fireplace into the 21st century with the power of paint.

What you need:

How we did it:

Step 1: Sand

We began by lightly sanding the entire surface we planned on painting. Due to the intricacies of the fireplace and mantle, we used both a sanding block and an orbital sander. In both instances, 120 grit sandpaper was used. Once the sanding was finished, we removed all the dust from our surface with a vacuum cleaner and cloth.

Step 2: Mask

Next, we moved onto masking, starting with the edges of the fireplace before moving onto the more complex features. For the rounded mirror, we used small bits of masking tape to form the curve. Although this process was slightly tedious, it was important not to rush. For the fireplace and tiles, we used the masking film to cover up this area as well as some of the floor to protect it from any drips while painting

Step 3: Prime

We then applied 1 coat of Porter's Paints Universal Primer to the fireplace. We first cut in with a brush before rolling with a mini roller and allowed it to dry for 24 hours.

Step 4: Paint

Finally, it was time to paint our topcoat. The existing fireplace tiles made the colour choice simple. We wanted to stay within the green/blue colour range to mirror the tiles and we landed on the richly elegant Blue Reef in Porter's Paints Aqua Satin Enamel. We applied 3 coats, allowing 2 hours of dry time between each coat. Once our final coat was dry, we removed the masking tape and film to reveal the stunningly updated fireplace.

So instead of trying to hide your outdated fireplace, why not create a beautiful feature with the gorgeous Porter’s Paint range, we promise it will become a talking point of your home.
