How To Upcycle An Op Shop Easel

One of our favourite places to visit is the local op shop. Why? Because it’s a haven for DIYers. Case in point, we found this IKEA easel in good nick but lacking personality, so we grabbed some fun colours and let the power of paint do its thing. Here’s how we upcycled it:

What you need:

    • 2 sample pots with contrasting shades (we used Dulux Equanimity & Dulux Bundaberg Sand)
    • Dulux 1StepPrep Primer
    • Masking Tape
    • Brushes
    • Terrazzo vinyl liner to match your chosen colours (optional)

How we did it:

Step 1:

We started by taping and masking the chalkboard before priming the easel with Dulux 1StepPrep.

Step 2:

Once the primer was dry, we masked the edges of the easel and painted our first coat of Dulux Equanimity. We allowed it to dry before painting our second coat.

Step 3:

Once our Dulux Equanimity was dry, we removed the tape along the edges of the easel and then masked off the already painted adjacent surfaces for our 2 coats of Dulux Bundaberg Sand.

Step 4:

Again, we painted our first coat and allowed it to dry before painting our second.

Step 5:

As a finishing touch, we added a terrazzo vinyl liner to the chalk tray that matched our chosen colour palette.

This upcycle project is proof that new is not always better. Save money and protect the environment from waste by using your DIY skills to give a second life to a pre-loved treasure. Pick up all your painting supplies from your local Inspirations Paint store.
