How To Spray Paint A Cooler

Nothing says summer like an Esky full of your favourite drinks. Here's how you can use the amazing range of Montana Australia spray paint to upcycle an Esky and turn it into the most prized possession at your summer BBQs.

Here’s what you need:

  • Methylated Spirits
  • Rag
  • Masking Film
  • Montana Plastic Primer
  • Base colour spray paint of your choice (we used Montana Hardcore Olive Green)
  • Secondary colour spray paint of your choice (we used Montana Hardcore Olive Green)

Here's how you do it:

Step 1: Prepare The Esky

To begin, clean any dirt and grime from the Esky and remove any stickers. Using the methylated spirits and rag, wipe down the exterior surfaces of the Esky, ensuring it is completely free of sticker residue.

Step 2: Prime The Esky

With the masking film, mask any surfaces not being painted on the Esky. Once done, spray the Esky with Montana Plastic Primer. For the best coverage possible, shake the can for 1 minute before testing the distance and flow of the spray on a scrap piece of cardboard or plastic. Allow the Esky to dry for 20 minutes.

Step 3: Apply Base Colour

Spray the Esky with your chosen base colour. As with the Montana Plastic Primer, shake the can for 1 minute before use and test the distance and flow of the spray on a scrap piece of cardboard or plastic. Apply your spray paint in even layers across the Esky until you reach your desired coverage. Allow to dry completely.

Step 4: Create The Pattern

Tape lines across the top half of the Esky with the masking tape. This will create the desired pattern. Mask off the base of the Esky with masking film.

Step 5: Apply Secondary Colour

Spray the Esky, including the lid, with your chosen secondary colour. Use the same shaking, testing and spraying technique from step 3. Allow to dry completely.

Bonus step: Personalise The Esky (as if the colour change wasn’t enough!)

Remove the masking film from the base of the Esky. Place a stencil onto your Esky and mask around it with the masking film. We chose to spray our last name onto the Esky in our secondary colour.

Step 6: Finishing The Esky

Remove the remaining masking film from the Esky and fill with your favourite drinks.

In just 6 simple steps, you can make sure you have the perfect companion for summer BBQs, family trips and fishing expeditions. Thanks to Montana Australia for their help in creating this amazing DIY project.
