Our Guide To Choosing The Right Coating For Your Deck
Staining or oiling your deck is an integral part of the maintenance that keeps your deck looking great all year round. But how do you decide what your deck needs? Read on for our guide to choosing the right coating for your deck.
First things first, what is the difference between an oil and a stain. Put simply, an oil enhances the natural look of your timber whereas a stain will add colour to your timber.
Decking oils are available in both oil-based and water-based products. Oil based products will penetrate into the pores of the timber whereas a water-based product not only penetrates into the timber, but it will also provide a protective UV barrier. This is the equivalent of sunscreen for your face and we all know how important that is.
Stains on the other hand can change the look of your timber as well as provide a high level of UV protection. This is particularly helpful if you are wanting to make your light-coloured treated pine timber look like a much more solid and rich timber. They too are available in oil based and water-based products.
Now that you know the difference between an oil and a stain, the next stage is choosing what you want your deck to look like. The best thing to do is to come in store and have a look at our sample boards. Like with paint, we are spoiled for choice when it comes to timber oils and stains. Don’t let this overwhelm you though. This choice is all about your personal aesthetic.
And don’t forget about sample pots. Using sample pots is a fantastic way to sample your oils and staining colours. This means you don’t have to hope your choice works out; you can make sure that it does.
