How To Spray Paint A Metal Fence

This might shock you, but it’s not that hard to paint your fence. What’s more, it’s the perfect project to enhance your homes exterior, a space that, let’s be honest, doesn’t get nearly as much love as our interiors. Don’t believe us? Simply follow the steps below to find out for yourself.

What you need:

How you do it:

Step 1:

Using a wire brush, clean off as much rust as possible from your fence. Take your time here and be thorough. Rust can be a thorn in the side of an amazing finish for your fence.

Step 2:

Spray 30 Seconds Outdoor Cleaner on to your fence to remove any algae. Wait 5 minutes before washing down your fence with a power washer.

Step 3:

Tape the top edge of your fence and surfaces around your fence including retaining walls. Use masking film to protect large areas and close walls from overspray.

Step 4:

Spot prime any remaining rust with Dulux Zinc Galv Spray Paint. This will provide an anti-corrosive coating to your metal, preventing further damage.

Step 5:

Prime your spray gun per the manufacturer’s instructions before adding to the paint can. Remember to test your spray pattern on cardboard before spraying your fence.

Step 6:

Spray 1 coat of primer on to your fence. Keep the spray gun perpendicular to the surface and roughly 30cm away from the fence. Use a steady, fast motion and overlap your last pass by approximately 50%. Allow to dry.

Step 7:

Once the primer is dry, apply at 2 coats of your topcoat (we used Dulux Domino). Don’t spray the colour too heavy on the first coat. It’s best to build up the colour in light layers to avoid the paint from dripping. Allow to dry between coats.

Step 8:

Sit back, relax and wish you painted your fence years ago.
