4 Signs Your Deck Needs Recoating

For those long, Aussie summer afternoons, a well-maintained deck is the perfect outdoor space for relaxation and entertainment. Over time, exposure to the elements, increased foot traffic and general wear and tear can take a toll on your deck's appearance. But how do you know it’s time to recoat? Here are 4 signs that it’s time to give your deck a fresh new coat.

Number 1: Your Deck Has Lost Its Shine

One of the first signs that your deck needs recoating is when it loses its lustre and shine. Constant exposure to sunlight, rain and foot traffic can cause the protective coating on your deck to wear away. The result is a dull, lacklustre finish on your deck (no-one wants this). If you want your deck to shine this summer, recoating with a high-quality deck stain or sealer is the way to go.

Number 2: The Colour Begins To Fade

If you notice the colour or your deck fading or the paint is peeling in patches, then it’s time to recoat. This damage is caused by UV rays from the sun breaking down the pigments in your deck's stain or paint. Recoating your deck with a UV-resistant product will not only restore the colour but also provide long-lasting protection against future fading, ensuring your deck remains vibrant for years to come. We like to think of this as sunscreen protection for your deck.

Number 3: Small Cracks Start To Appear

Small cracks appearing or splits in the wooden boards of your deck is a sign that the protective coating has deteriorated and a recoat is needed. These cracks or splits expose the wood to moisture, leading to rot, mould, and further damage to your deck's structure. Recoating with a waterproof sealant or stain will create a barrier that prevents water from seeping into the wood, minimising the risk of cracks and preserving the integrity of your deck.

Number 4: Your Deck Absorbs Water

Here’s a test: Drop some water onto the surface of your deck. If it pools on the surface, your deck is in good condition. However, if the water is absorbed by your deck, then it’s time to recoat. Water absorption can lead to swelling, warping, and rotting of the wood. This not only looks bad, but it compromises the stability and safety of your deck. Recoating your deck with a water-repellent sealant will create a protective layer, preventing damage and extending the lifespan of your deck.
