How To Paint Metal

Painting metal, but don’t know where to start? We’ve got you covered. For a strong, visually appealing finish from your painted metal surface, it’s important you follow the correct steps when painting. Luckily, you don’t have to search too far for the right advice to help you achieve an awesome finish. Read on to learn how you can get the most out of your next metal painting project.

Step 1: Surface Prep

When painting metal, the first step should always be correct surface preparation. That means you’ll need to remove any flaking or damaged paint from the surface if it’s been painted before. This is easily achieved with 120 grit sandpaper. However, if the paint is in good condition, you’ll instead need to simply roughen it. We recommend using 240 grit sandpaper for this. For rusted metal surfaces, remove the rust using a wire brush.

Once you have removed the damaged paint, rust or roughened the metal surface, you’ll next need to wipe the metal surface with acetone to remove any residual grease, oils and dirt. Following this prep step will not only give you the finish you desire, but it will also help you avoid the cost and inconvenience of having to repaint much sooner than you’d like.

Step 2: Prime

Once prepped, the next step is to prime. However, it can be difficult to navigate the various metal priming products available. Here’s a quick guide to help you get started:

Etch Primer:

This anti-corrosive metal primer etches the surface for superior adhesion and optimal topcoat performance. It also provides superior metal protection against rust and corrosion. Ideal for galvanised iron and ZINCALUME® surfaces
and are suitable for aluminium, copper, brass, steel, stainless steel and wrought iron.

Cold Galv Primer:

This primer is best for maximum rust protection in severe corrosive conditions. The zinc-rich formulation forms a barrier against moisture and corrosion. Ideal for steel, wrought iron, welds and repairing damaged galvanised iron. For industrial strength metal protection, use in combination with Metalshield® topcoats.

All Surface Primer:

This primer’s zinc formulation provides superior metal protection and excellent adhesion. Heavy duty primer suitable for priming mild steel, aluminium, stainless steel, copper, brass, galvanised steel, fibreglass and ZINCALUME®. Ideal for bare steel and wrought iron surfaces.

On new bare steel, wrought iron and pre-painted surfaces, a primer will enhance: the finish, corrosion protection, ease of application and more, depending on the priming product chosen.

Step 3: Topcoat

Finally, it’s time for your topcoat (we hope you’ve chosen an amazing colour). We recommend you apply 2-3 coats of your topcoat to your metal. For the best finish, allow each coat to dry before you apply the next. There’s a variety of colours and sheen levels available to ensure your finished metal project looks just that, the perfect finishing touch to your home.
