How To Paint Laminate Furniture

You’d be hard-pressed to find an Aussie home that doesn’t have at least one piece of laminate furniture. They’re easy to build and solve your storage woes, but more importantly… laminate furniture is cheap. But just because something is cheap, it doesn’t have to look that way. With the right products and the right advice, you can turn your piece of cheap laminate furniture into a stunning piece of home décor. Here’s how.

What you need:

Step 1: Clean

Thie first thing you need to do with your piece of laminate furniture is remove the old hardware and clean all the surfaces with Selleys Sugar Soap. It’s important to be thorough with your cleaning. Any grease and dirt left on the furniture’s surface could result in the top coat of Dulux Renovation Range not adhering to the surface, meaning peeling or flaking paint. Once clean, rinse the surface twice with clean water to remove any residue left by the Sugar Soap.

Step 2: Fill Holes And Sand

Next, fill in any holes with Selleys Spakfilla. Allow to dry before lightly sanding the filled surface until smooth to the touch. Sand down the glossy and semi-gloss surfaces with the 400-grit sandpaper to dull the finish. Finally, remove the dust with a damp cloth.

Step 3: Prime

Pour the entire contents of the additive packet into the primer and stir using an up-and-down scooping action until the additive is completely mixed into the paint. Roll the primer onto all the laminate surfaces. For a smooth, consistent finish, gently go over the surface with an unloaded roller when fully coated with minimal pressure. Allow 4 hours dry time before applying your top coat.

Bonus Step: Trim

For a more designer look, add some wooden trim to your piece of furniture. Apply primer to your trim. Once dry, cut your trim to size and attach to your laminate furniture with liquid nails. When the glue is set and your trim is in place, caulk around edges.

Step 4: Paint

As with the primer, pour the entire contents of the additive packet into your top coat paint and stir thoroughly until the additive is completely mixed in. Next, cut in with a 38mm angled sash cutter and then roll with a 4mm nap microfibre roller. Lay off for a smooth, consistent finish by gently going over the surface with an unloaded roller with minimal pressure. Allow 8 hours drying time before applying your second coat.

Achieving the designer finish doesn’t have to break the bank. With the Dulux Renovation Range and expert advice for your local Inspirations Paint store, you can turn your cheap laminate furniture into aesthetic, bespoke furnishings that will elevate your home décor.
