Revitalise Wrought Iron Chairs
Do you have an outdoor metal chair that has been out in the Australian sun for too long and is starting to look a little worse for wear? It’s time to give the chair some TLC and give it a fresh new look! Follow the step-by-step guide below for an easy transformation.

Prep
With the metal chair being outside for a long time, it will need a good clean to get it ready before adding a lick of paint. Use a wire brush to scrape and brush the surface of the chair to remove any rust or corrosion that has set in. This will both clean the surface and allow the paint to properly adhere to the chair.
Next step is to wash the chair with water and sugar soap to remove any metal flakes, dust and grime. Once it's clean, spray the chair with a garden hose and let dry.
Prime
First up we need to prime the surface of the chair. We used Dulux Metalshield Etch Primer (colour Light Grey, in a convenient spray paint version) as it etches the surface for optimal topcoat performance and is an anti-corrosive metal primer that can be used on aluminium, copper, brass, stainless steel and wrought iron surfaces.
Once the undercoat has been sprayed on the entire surface of the chair, allow an hour for the primer to dry.
Tip: Lay a drop cloth on the floor and hang a second cloth behind the project to prevent the area around the project being covered in overspray.
Paint
Now for the fun part!
We’re starting things off with Dulux Metalshield Epoxy Enamel, which while not as effective against moisture and dampness as a waterproof paint, still offers plenty of protection and durability. Apply two coats of Dulux Metalshield Epoxy Enamel to the chair using a sash cutter brush. A 50mm sash cutter is a great size as it allows you to get into the ornate details of the chair. We chose Dulux’s Iridescent Peacock to add a nice pop of colour to our patio.
Tip: Make sure the project has been placed in a good spot to both apply the paint and allow the paint to dry without being moved or disturbed. Dulux Metalshield Epoxy Enamel is touch dry after 4 hours and fully cured after 24 hours, so you don’t want to be moving the chair before its dry and ruining a coat with fingerprints!
As excited as you are to get your project completed, you’ll need to allow 24 hours in between coats for the paint to fully cure. Make sure to always read the product instructions listed on the can for best results, as dying times can vary by product type and weather conditions.
Once you’ve applied the two coats of Dulux Metalshield Epoxy Enamel, allow a final 24 hours for the paint to fully dry, and that’s it. Sit back and enjoy a morning coffee or an afternoon drink on your revitalised wrought iron chair!
